USDLDF 1st National Dragon and Lion Dance Competition 2018

05.24-27.2018
We have traveled far and long to Sing Yung's very first competition in Boston, Massachusetts! Thank you Red Label for making our new shirts in time for travel!

This national competition was held by the United States Dragon and Lion Dance Federation (USDLDF). The 1st place winners of the Freestyle (Jong/Pole) Competition would then be sent to represent USDLDF in the 13th Genting World Lion Dance Competition.
We entered in all categories except the Dragon category. Here are our awards:
  • Traditional category: 2nd and 3rd place
  • Freestyle (Jong/Pole) category: 1st and 2nd place
  • Drum showcase: 1st place

Unfortunately, we didn't have enough manpower and time to have much pictures taken. Luckily, our friend, Truong Nguyen, was there to catch everything! Go on and head over to his page for pictures from this whole event! truong.smugmug.com/USDLDF/

Here are some of the pictures and videos that we got a chance to take:

After we arrived and settled in our bed and breakfast in Boston, we decided to check out Quincy Market and of course, have a lobster roll for dinner. We got to relax a little and prepared for the next few days of getting competition ready.

Traditional Category

This was the first day of the competition. It included a welcome ceremony and 19 traditional routines. Here are pictures of the opening ceremony and group photos, and videos of our routines in the traditional category. At the very end of the day, we had to set up for the freestyle category for the next day.

Freestyle Category and Drumming Showcase

Second day of the competition consisted of the Freestyle (jongs) category, Drumming Showcase, and the Awards Banquet.
The Freestyle category was the first to go up, but unfortunately, we had to cancel the category. As we assembled it and tested it for safety, we deemed that the set was not up to measurement standards, nor was it stable enough to compete on. Instead of competing, Sing Yung held a seminar/lecture on how we teach and train for acrobatic lion dance on traditional chairs/tables and on freestyle jongs.
The next category of the day was the Drumming Showcase. Out of 13 teams that had competed, Sing Yung secured 1st place!

Awards Banquet
At the Awards Banquet, the program was to have the winning team of the freestyle category perform, but the space was deemed unstable due to the restaurant being a historical building. At the last minute, we modified both Team A's and Team B's routine to perform as a traditional routine. After both routines, we had help from Colorado and Wisconsin to help go around fundraising for our trip to Genting, Malaysia.

Thank you all that have helped and donated at the banquet! We hoped you enjoyed our lion dance, Hawaii style!
